Sometimes, fashion is like dressing up. You can dress up to create a fantasy, mask your emotions or do it just because you feel like it.

I am very good at creating costumes. Two years ago, I went to the Karneval dressed as Chiquita. You know what makes a costume great ? If everyone recognises who you are meant to be. I was called Chiquita all day and I learnt about a Spanish song that is essentially a tribute to the banana. Did I mention that I absolutely hate bananas ?

When I lived in the UK, dressing up was something done for (birthday) parties, charity events and more. I found myself missing Karneval every year on the beautiful British Isles, but there were actually plenty of opportunities for me to dress up and hone my craft for fancy dress. Now, I basically make all my costumes ‚from scratch‘. If anything, someone should challenge me to make an outfit in 24 hours (any takers ?).

But for some, dressing up is just a part of their everyday life. They shun the label of ’normal‘ and express themselves through their clothes in ways that push boundaries. If you see one of these people, don’t be the rude person to laugh and point. I was once on the tube in London and saw someone dressed as what can only be described an ethereal wood elf. I envy that kind of bravery. I’ve gotten pretty good at not caring about what strangers think, but that attitude flies out of the window when you’re one of the few visible people where you live to be daring when it comes to fashion choices. The moral of the story is (because I’m waffling): dress however you want, people will talk either way.

Wisst Ihr was ein gutes Kostüm ausmacht ?
