Last of the summer posts! I am bit sad that summer has left us, but I don’t mind autumn. The leaves look beautiful and it’s actually not that cold yet. The dress in the pictures has more than paid for itself, as I recently wore it to a baptism (and the ensuing party). I felt somewhat underdressed as my relatives and other family friends were mostly dressed in traditional Ghanaian clothing, so I made a mental note to invest more in Ankara and Kente clothes. I was relieved that this dress was approved by my relatives and I didn’t need to buy a new one. I originally planned to wear the red dress from this post, but I was quickly reminded of the fact that in Ghana, red is a colour reserved for funerals (in combination with black, of course). Recently, I was talking with some friends about dress codes and acceptable colours for weddings and so on. We also talked about times when we had felt severely overdressed. From what I can remember from personal experience, being underdressed has always felt worse to me. I will never forget the time I turned up to a friend’s birthday party wearing chinos, Chucks, a t-shirt and a cardigan, only to find that everyone else had gone for the ’smart casual‘-look. It was so bad that even a friend asked me why I was dressed so casual.

If you’re ever in a bind and haven’t got time or money to get a whole new outfit for a more fancy event, I suggest the following: accessorise the shit out of that outfit. But everything in moderation: too many accessories can have you looking tacky and cluttered. Adding a pair of heels usually does wonders, too. The right kind of jewellery can make your outfit look much more expensive than it actually is. And in the end everyone will secretly be impressed as to how you pulled off such a stunning look with so little cash!
